Year of the Pig: Good Luck! . . . oink, oink

Year of the Pig 2019Gong Xi Fa Cai! A month after the western world, China has celebrated the start of its New Year last week. It is the year of the pig. In the western astrology, each month is assigned to one of twelve zodiac signs. In the Chinese astrology, each year has a zodiac sign. The twelve Chinese zodiac signs are rat, ox, tiger, rabbit, dragon, snake, horse, goat, monkey, rooster, dog and pig.

He expressed his gratitude by letting each of them rule for one year. Every twelve years is the turn of the same animal again.

Each year is also assigned with one of the five elements: fire, earth, water, metal, and wood. These elements occur even twice, as yin and as yang. A complicated system of the twelve earth branches in combination with ten heavenly tribes determines the 60-year cycle of the Chinese calendar.

After the year of the ‘Yang Earth Dog,’ we have entered the year of the ‘Ying Earth Pig.’ What can we expect from the year of the pig according to the Chinese astrology predictions?

The pig is not regarded as a smart animal in China. It likes to sleep and eat a lot, and it becomes fat. Thus it usually symbolizes laziness and clumsiness. However, it also behaves well, is tolerant and has no intention to harm others. The pig is said to bring luck, wealth and contentment to people. On the other hand, the pig tends to be light-hearted, naïve and excessive. Therefore, one should pay particular attention to its limits this year.

The earth element that accompanies the pig this year stands for durability, reliability, and results. ‘Yin earth’ is the symbol of a garden. As Yin is female, it also stands for ‘mother earth’ which brings relaxation and comfort, a combination with a positive influence on natural sciences and the environment.

However, the fire element, that symbolizes happiness, optimism, and confidence, has ended with the year of the pig. It will not return before 2025. The lack of the fire element is interpreted by feng shui masters as a decline in optimism with challenging conditions ahead — a sign for harsher economic conditions over the next years.

For the different industries the feng shui masters predict the following development:

GREAT: The best performing industries in an earth year are the wood industries as wood conquers earth. The earth element is a symbol of money to the wood industry. Typical wood industries are consumer, healthcare and pharma, fashion, media and publishing, paper, education, plants and flowers, and environment-related industries.

GOOD: The second best industries could be earth industries, as earth conquers water. Typical earth industries are construction and property, architecture, mining, agriculture, insurance, computer software, and high-tech.

TO AVOID: Metal and water industries will not prosper this year according to feng shui. Typical metal industries (industries that depend on metal or are related to financial accounting) are banking/financial/accounting, machinery, cars, and tech. Water industry may face stiff competition in this year of the pig. Typical water industries (industries, that are relating to water or need water for production as well as sales, personal services, and entertainment) are shipping, transport, communication, cleaning services, recruitment agencies, beauty, travel and tourism.

The worst months of this year according to feng shui will be May, August, and November. But don’t worry! Always carry the pendant of a tiger with you and it will minimize any negative influence on you.

In this sense, we wish you a prosperous year ahead!
